There once was a young Indian woman who traveled back and forth through the woods. From every bush she came to, she bit off a twig, until one day, she bit off a twig that was too large and she became pregnant at the tender age of eighteen.
Bigger and bigger, she grew, until at last she traveled no more.
One night, she gave birth to her unwanted child and placed him in a small canoe.
She set the canoe adrift and let it float downstream. The water was rough, but the child somehow survived this maiden voyage.
The canoe floated to a village, where the child was stranded on the sandy shore. One of the women found the baby and brought it to her home. She nursed the child and nursed the child. The child became crippled by disease and unable to move.
Surprisingly, the child grew up to become a great Medicine Man, the great Sachem.
He granted all desires to his people. Later, however, his tribe moved away from their old camp. Unable to move for himself, the Sachem was left behind.
Before his people left, they built a fine wigwam for the great Sachem. They became so accustomed to calling upon his powers that they still returned to make their requests.
His tribal members asked him for medicine of all kinds. When he granted their wishes,
he asked them,
"Turn me over and you will find your medicine beneath me. Allow these gifts to unlock the simple place where peace be."
A young man went to the conjurer for help.
The Sachem asked, "What is it that you desire?"
This man said, "I want to live as long as the world shall stand."
"Your request is a difficult one to consider, but I will do my best to answer it," replied the great Sachem.
"Now turn me over and you will find your medicine beneath me. Allow these gifts to unlock the simple place where peace be."
And underneath his body was the grand herb.
He said, "Go to a place that is bare of everything, so bare it is destitute of all vegetation, and stand there."
The young man went according to the Sachem's instructions, but looking back at the Sachem, the standing man saw branches and twigs sprout all over his own body. He had turned into a cedar tree,
to stand there forever--useless to everyone.
